Beck 'Produces' A Genius Innovation That Appeals To The User-Generated Generation:

In the wake of Modern Guilt and The Information, Beck’s latest album comes in an almost-forgotten form—twenty songs existing only as individual pieces of sheet music, never before released or recorded. Complete with full-color, heyday-of- home-play-inspired art for each song and a lavishly produced hardcover carrying case (and, when necessary, ukelele notation), the Song Reader is an experiment in what an album can be at the end of 2012—an alternative that enlists the listener in the tone of every track, and that’s as visually absorbing as a dozen gatefold LPs put together.

The songs here are as unfailingly exciting as you’d expect from their author, but if you want to hear “Do We? We Do,” or “Don’t Act Like Your Heart Isn’t Hard,” bringing them to life depends on you.

The end of March I will be in Minneapolis for the Design Intersections Summit at the University of Minnesota. This years theme asks “Tweak or Leap? - What does Design Thinking demand?” and I am looking forward to discuss that as well as facilitate an assignment with the participants of the conference for 4Front. We will also kick off a Knowmadic Lab with John Moravec.

Exciting times since I will move on to NYC after that and also meet with Matthew Abrams who is the founder of Mycelium School. More on that later.

This years’ Christmas and New Years cards are going to be special: I’m going to send Cardles, the idea (and new business) of Denis, my colleague at Indeed and his wife Yvette. Simply said, it’s a unique greeting card that folds into a candleholder.

The idea came about whilst looking for an alternative for a birth card for their premature daughter. Not knowing if the baby would make it through the first months, they decided to wait until she came home before sending a “welcome home” card that would later develop into the Cardle. They felt the idea of sending a light was appropriate to communicate the full range of emotions without words, whether it’d be intense sadness or extreme happiness.

While Yvette is responsible for the system and product development of the Cardle, Denis is behind the brand and marketing as well as the first two illustration series. I wish both of them the best of luck with Cardle (and their secret new product which I am going to see soon!).

The Cardle is made of flame retardant and fully recyclable paper. It is printed with bio-ink and comes in a carton packaging.
